Payment agreements for fines

If you’re unable to pay the full amount immediately, you can apply for a payment agreement. It’s important that you follow up the agreement so that your claim does not proceed to enforcement proceedings and a deduction from your income.

We recommend that you split the claim into instalments rather than defer the payment.

You pay the claim over up to 24 months or by at least NOK 500 per month.

If you have several unpaid claims or need an extended payment period

You must log in to My page to apply for a payment plan if you:

  • have several unpaid claims
  • want a longer the payment period than 24 months (6 months for compensations)
  • want to pay less than NOK 500 per month

If you’re unable to use online services, you may also submit your application on paper. The application must be in writing and state what it applies to. You must include proof of all the relevant information.

Example of information that may be important to attach proof of:

  • whether your income has been reduced
  • new expenses that we may take into consideration and that are not already registered
  • increases in existing expenses, for example, your rent
  • changes in your marital status, so that you now pay all the expenses yourself
  • whether you are supporting your spouse/cohabiting partner

You do not have to provide proof of cost of living expenses.

Send the application to:

  • A valuation or estimated value of real property/residential property.
  • A confirmed value of other assets, such as a cabin, car or a boat. This could be in the form of a valuation, estimation, purchase receipt, or similar.

  • cost of living expenses

Not having the ability to pay is not in and of itself a sufficient reason to have a claim resulting from a criminal case cancelled (waived). To cancel a claim resulting from a criminal case, there must be extraordinary circumstances that makes it unreasonable to demand that you pay.

SI does not have the authority to cancel claims resulting from a criminal case, but we can pass your application on to the right authorities.

We do, however, have the authority to process and decide applications for cancelling reminder fees for fines.

The police may decide that you must serve a prison sentence for fines if you are unable to pay.

The collection continues until the case is settled

Be aware that an application for the cancellation of a claim will usually not stop the collection process. The collection process will not be stopped unless your application is approved.
