Claims in connection with deaths

Claims from the Norwegian National Collection Agency (SI) will stop if the person who owes money dies. Generally, they are not cancelled, with the exception of fines and student loans.

The collection stops automatically once we are notified of a death. Nothing will happen with the claims until the form of probate has been decided. We'll send a request to the district court in the deceased person's municipality of residence and request information about the form of probate, heirs or any administrator of the estate. 

Once the form of probate has been decided and we have been notified of the heirs, we'll either send an invoice or a letter to the heirs. 

Supporting documents

We ask that you provide the certificate of probate or letters of administration and proof of funeral expenses or other expenses. It's important that we receive all the supporting documents we request so that we can determine whether to require that the heirs settle the debt of the deceased.

Power of attorney

If you're an heir or a next of kin and want information about the debt of the deceased person, you must get a power of attorney from the district court. We have a duty of confidentiality that prohibits us from responding to requests regarding the deceased person's debts unless we receive a power of attorney.

The Norwegian National Collection Agency (SI) does not collect compensation on the behalf of heirs. We will close the case and notify the heirs by letter with information about how they may take the case further.

The exception is if we're collecting the compensation through deductions from income. In such cases, we will not stop the collection until the deduction period is over. This period lasts for two years from when the deduction was determined.

To gain access to the compensation claim against the deceased person, you must get a power of attorney from the district court. We have a duty of confidentiality that prohibits us from responding to requests regarding the deceased person's compensation claims unless we receive this power of attorney.
